The island is 47 acres in size and in 1934 a local Gilford family bought the island, then built a log cabin on the northwest corner, with a deck right over the water. This home still exists today. The family leased a portion of the island to M.I.T. and the U.S. Navy to conduct experiments for the camouflaging of submarines in 1947. The Navy conducted underwater laser beam testing and to this day the tracks used in these experiments still lay in the water off of Diamond Island. The island has never had electricity and remains that way today. Owners use generators and solar panels to supply all the power they need.
